Ronald Fox Obituary

Ronald L. Fox, 92, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2024, at Bloomsburg Geisinger Hospital. He had been a resident at Vintage Knolls Assisted Living Facility in Danville for several years.

Ron was born in Berwick on July 12, 1931, to Emma Fox. A lifelong Berwick resident, Ron graduated from Berwick High School in 1949. He subsequently joined the U.S. Army National Guard and was stationed with Company M at Camp Atterbury in Indiana before deploying as a U.S. Army Sergeant to Germany in 1950. He returned to Berwick to marry his sweetheart, Ellen J. Hess, in 1953 and they were a loving couple for 59 years before her death in 2012.

In addition to his parents and wife, Ron was preceded in death by his half-brother, David Foulk, his son-in-law Morgan Merritt, and his youngest child, David L. Fox, who died of Covid complications in 2020.

During his early years of raising a family, Ron attended carpentry school in the evenings and became a master woodworker, building furniture and remodeling his entire home. Ron was employed at the ACF as a young man and later was the General Manager of the Multiplex Manufacturing Company in Berwick. He was then employed as an engineering manager at Kawneer in Bloomsburg for over 25 years. He retired in 1993, enabling him to spend more time with his family and grandchildren.

Ron and his wife enjoyed travel to visit family and friends. For their 50th anniversary they cruised to Alaska, and in 2004 they were part of the Berwick group that visited Berwick-Upon-Tweed in England.

Ron was a lifelong member of the Defender Fire Company; a fifty year-plus member of Bethany United Methodist Church; a sixty-two-year member of Knapp Lodge No. 462 F&AM; and a lifelong Bulldogs fan.

Ron is survived by two children, Annie Merritt and Stephen Fox, MD, and six grandchildren: Zachary Merritt, MD; Evan Fox, MD; Jacob Fox, MD; Benjamin Fox, PhD student; Shannon Fox; and Matthew Fox, PhD student. Ron is also survived by his sister-in-law Chris Mokris, and two cousins, Marie Laubach and Shirley Naugle. He was also preceded in death by many close friends.

Ron will be remembered by his children for the many family camping vacations, his enjoyment of photography, gardening, deer hunting, card games, country music, ballroom dancing, and Italian food, his wonderful sense of humor, his easy-going life outlook, and his undying love and sacrifices for his wife and family. He was also a prankster, bringing laughter to his family and especially to his grandchildren. His passing leaves a hole in many hearts, and he will be fondly remembered and profoundly missed.

Private graveside services will be held Monday morning, January 29 at Pine Grove Cemetery on Walnut Street in Berwick. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory can be made to the McBride Memorial Library, 500 N. Market Street, Berwick, PA 18603.
