Nancy J. Hopper, 89, of Berwick, passed away peacefully Sunday, October 31, 2021 at Fritzingertown Senior Living Community. Born in Berwick on December 31, 1931, she was a daughter to the late Ira and Edna (Cain) Ohl.
Nancy was a graduate of Berwick High School, Class of 1949. On October 10, 1957 she wed Jesse R. Hopper, Sr., with whom she would share 31 years of marriage and raise a family. She had been employed by the Pennsylvania State Employees Retirement System, from which she retired in 1993. A woman of great faith, she was a member of the First Reformed United Church of Christ in Berwick, where she could regularly be found assisting with any tasks that she could help with. She had also been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Berwick Chapter 228 and the Order of the Amaranth. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and ceramics. Nancy had loved “leaf peeping” and taking in nature. Her greatest joy, however, was her family and time spent with them, especially at her cabin.
Surviving Nancy is her beloved companion of nearly 30 years, Jerry Garbacik. Also surviving are her children: Jesse R.Hopper, Jr. and wife Rosemary of Berwick, Nancy Moyer and husband, John, of Huntingdon, Pamela Kleintob and husband, Michael, of Berwick, Don E. Hopper and fiancee, Shelley Litz, of Shickshinny and Jerry Garbacik, Jr. of Drums; grandchildren: Suzie Onisick and husband, Joseph, Jesse Hopper III and wife, Lisa, Lori Turofski and husband, Eric, Kimmie Petro, Michelle Bower and husband, Matt, Anthony Kleintob, Don E. Hopper, Jr. and Jessica R. Hopper; 15 great-grandchildren, her great-great grandchildren, a niece, and several cousins.
In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse R. Hopper, Sr., who passed away April 14, 1989. She was also preceded by her brother, Robert A. Ohl, a great-grandson, and two nephews.
All are welcome to join Nancy’s family for her funeral at 11:00 AM Friday, November 5, 2021 at the Kelchner, McMichael & Readler Funeral Home, Inc., 119-121 E. Third Street, Berwick. Her pastor, Pastor Gary Barraco will officiate. Friends will be received from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Private interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery Annex, Walnut Street, Berwick.
