William H. Grassley, 94, life-long resident of Berwick, passed away at Grace Home, St. Frances Cabrini Hospital, Alexandria, LA. Wednesday, January 1, 2014 after a brief illness. He had been residing with his his daughter, Donna and her husband, Robert at their residence in DeVille, Louisiana for the past eight months. He was born September 25, 1919 in Berwick, a son to the late Henry and Jennie Mae (DeHaven) Grassley. He attended Berwick schools and worked at the Berwick ACF until it closed before joining Local 76 in Hazleton and working as a carpenter until retiring in 1984. Bill served in the Army as a paratrooper during World War II. He was a former member of Berwick VFW Post 821 and the Berwick Eagles. as well as a life member of the West Berwick Hose Company. Hunting and fishing were two of this favorite activities. William was preceded in death by the former Clara Virginia Craig, his loving wife of 66 years, on June 17, 2008. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by 2 sons: Robert (1947) and Doyle (2004), 5 brothers: Albert, Robert, Ray, Roy, and Lawrence, and 2 sisters: Elizabeth (Biddie) Ash and Bessie Klingerman. He is survived by two sons: Albert and his wife, Nancy of Alabama and Daniel and his wife, Theresa of Mifflinburg, two daughters: Donna Marie Lamon and her husband, Robert of Louisiana, and Valerie Mae Fenstemaker and her husband, William of Berwick, fifteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. His funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, January 8 at the McMichael-Rairigh & Baker Funeral Home, 119-121 E. 3rd St., Berwick. Stephen C. Potutschnig, Pastor at the Berwick Assembly Of God Church will serve as the officiant.
