Vernon R. "Foss" Bloom, Sr., 88, of Berwick, passed away peacefully October 4, 2017 at Berwick Retirement Village II. Born in Berwick March 23, 1929, he was a son to the late Warren and Mary (Kershner) Bloom. Vernon attended Berwick Area schools and proudly served in the Pennsylvania National Guard. Before retiring, he worked at Naugle's Lumberyard, the Berwick Forge, PennDOT, and the Dana Corp. in Reading. Vernon was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and the West Berwick Fire Co. He was a life member of the Huckleberry Hunting Club. Foss enjoyed golfing, bowling, and playing pinball. He took great pride in his yard and spent many hours maintaining it. He would spend countless hours relaxing in his breezeway watching the birds and squirrels. Foss also enjoyed making candy and working at his nephew's french fry stand at local fairs. However, his greatest joy in life was the time he spent with his friends and family. A kind and caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend, he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Surviving Vernon is his loving wife of 67 years, the former Ruth Crumb. Also surviving are his sons: Vernon "Butch" Bloom, Jr. and wife, Lucy of Berwick and Richard Bloom and wife, Deborah of Nescopeck, daughter: Susan Hughes and husband, John of Berwick, grandchildren: Jan Whitebread and wife, Diana of Nescopeck, Jodi Cienki and companion Tom Burkey of VA, Jamie Sue Yule and husband, Dan of Berwick, Travis Bloom and companion, Jennifer Frantz of Doylestown, and Tyler Bloom and wife, Jayme of MD, great-grandchildren: Christian and Cody Whitebread, Melody Cienki, and Kyle and Nicholas Yule, brothers: Paul Bloom of Bloomsburg and Carl Bloom of Berwick, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by brothers: Roland, Parvin, Ivan, Willard, Warren, and Franklin Bloom and sisters: Geraldine Andreas, June DiPaolo, and Uthema Shaffer. All are welcome to join Vernon's family for visitation 10:00 AM, Saturday, October 14 at Grace Lutheran Church, 1315 Fairview Avenue, Berwick. His memorial service will be at 11:00. Pastor Chad Hebrink of Grace Lutheran Church will officiate. Interment will follow at Rose Lawn Cemetery, W. Front Street, Berwick.
