Stephen Michael Gaito

October 2, 1946 — July 4, 2020

Berwick

Stephen Michael Gaito, 73, of Berwick, passed away on July 4, 2020 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.  He was born in Jersey City, NJ on October 2, 1946 to Stephen and Noreen (Downhouser) Gaito.

Steve is survived by his wife of 50 years, the former Donna Kay Beiter.  He is also survived by his son, Stephen Gaito of Tobyhanna and his daughter, Kristi Kutteroff and husband, Eric, of Schnecksville; grandchildren:  Jessica and Nicholas Kutteroff and Olivia and Cameron Gaito, and numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis Cardinale, and brother, Harold Gaito.

Steve was a supervisor at Berwick Forge & Fabricating for many years and was the last person out the door when they permanently shut down.  He was an active member of the Maria Assunta Society, the American Legion, and St. Mary’s RC Church.  He had also been a member of the Knights of Columbus.  Steve served in the U.S. Army directly after high school, serving several years before being honorably discharged.

Steve’s family was the world to him, and to his family he was the world.  Steve loved his dogs.  He was a great sports fan of the NY Giants and the NY Yankees.  In high school, he played football and wrestled.  He loved coaching and mentoring little league and youth football.

Steve’s kindness and infectious smile were known well in the Berwick community.  You never met a person who knew him who didn’t love him.  Steve made every single person feel like they were the most special person in his life.  He never took anything for granted.  He showed gratitude and appreciation for the simplest acts of kindness shown to him.  Steve was overwhelmed by the love and support everyone showed him throughout his battle.  Through it all, he maintained his pleasant demeanor, his heart-warming smile, all without a single complaint. To say this man will be missed is an understatement. Steve was a true inspiration to all who knew him.

Steve’s services will be announced at a later date.  Memorial contributions in his name can be made to Animal Resource Center, PO Box 439, Bloomsburg, PA 17815 or to Sarcoma Foundation of America, PO Box 98160, Washington, DC 20090-8160.  The Kelchner, McMichael & Readler Funeral Home, Inc. is honored to serve the Gaito family.  Online messages of love and support can be left at www.kelchnerfuneralhome.com.
