Shirley A. (Adolph) Francis

Shirley A. Francis, 89, of Berwick, passed away peacefully Monday, June 22, 2020 at Berwick Retirement Village II.  Born in Wilkes-Barre April 27, 1931, she was a daughter to the late Louis and Elizabeth (Jenkins) Adolph.

Shirley was a graduate of GAR High School in Wilkes-Barre, class of 1949, and of the Philadelphia School of Sciences and Arts, where she studied radiology.  Following graduation, she began her career at Coatesville General Hospital.  Shirley moved to Berwick, where she was a 33 year employee of the Berwick Hospital Center and served as the director of radiology for 25 of those years, until her retirement in 2000.  She was instrumental in developing the mammography suite and was an advocate for the importance of mammography.  A woman of great faith, Shirley was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where she served as an officer on church council and on numerous committees.  She was also a past president of Women of the ELCA and of the Berwick Women’s Civic Club.

Surviving Shirley is her daughter, Betsy Kelchner, and husband, Mark, of Berwick.  She is also survived by granddaughter, Katelyn Kelchner of Berwick, and extended family members:  Marilyn and Robert Ungemach of Berwick, Sue Ellen Miller of New Hope, and Douglas Ungemach of Chesterfield, MI.

All are welcome to join Shirley’s family for her funeral at 11:00 AM Friday, June 26 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1600 Fowler Avenue, Berwick, PA 18603.  Friends will be received from 10:00 AM until the time of service.  Pastor Chad Hebrink will officiate.  Interment at Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, will follow.  Memorial contributions in Shirley’s name can be made to the music fund or to the perpetual care fund at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at the address given above.  The Kelchner, McMichael & Readler Funeral Home, Inc. is honored to serve Shirley’s family.  Online messages of love and support can be left at www.kelchnerfuneralhome.com.
