Robert H. Smith, 77, of Berwick, died peacefully and with his family at his side Friday, April 11, 2025 at New York Harbor Healthcare System. Born in Berwick on March 28, 1948, he was a son to the late Michael G. Smith and Florence (Force) Beaver.
Mr. Smith attended Berwick Area Schools. He was a proud Vietnam War Veteran having served in the US Army 199th Light Infantry Regiment and was awarded the Purple Heart. Bob was a man of great faith in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and a member of Bethel Bible Church in Berwick. His experiences while serving his country set him on a course to become a tireless advocate for his fellow veterans. He was Commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 529 of Berwick and was currently Sargeant-At-Arms of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Department of Pennsylvania. Bob’s generosity was not limited to fellow veterans. He was always willing to assist in any way that he was able. He enjoyed crafting, and many local individuals have received hand-made gifts from him. He loved spending time with his beloved family, as well as his dog, Champ, by whom he is deeply missed.
Surviving Bob is his beloved wife, Rose M. (Iddings) Smith, with whom he celebrated 42 years of marriage on January 29. Also surviving are his children: Monica Learn and husband, Timothy, of Berwick, Bobby Smith of Berwick, and Laura Bobersky and husband, Mike, of Benton; grandchildren: Natalia Pasquale, Olivia Learn, Alessandra Pasquale, Antonio Pasquale, Sergio Pasquale, Jacob Bobersky, Janessa Bobersky, Nolan Smith, Catalina Smith, and Mariano Garcia; siblings: Howard Smith, Roger Smith, and Clara Mankoski; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a sister, Florence “Sevilla” Benjamin.
Funeral Services will be held 10 AM Friday, April 18, 2025 at Bethel Bible Church, 1940 Fairview Avenue, Berwick. Reverend Daniel Potter will officiate. His viewing will be 5-7 PM Thursday, April 17, 2025 at the Kelchner, McMichael & Readler Funeral Home, Inc., 119-121 E. Third Street, Berwick. Interment with Military Funeral Honors will be at Elan Memorial Park, Bloomsburg, following the funeral. Contributions to help defray funeral costs may be made to his family.
