On Tuesday, October 22, 2019, Peter Horvat, 96, of Berwick, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his residence. He was born October 12, 1923 in Berwick, a son to the late Eva and Frank Horvath. Peter served as a Coxswain in the Navy during WWII in both the Atlantic and the Pacific. After the war, he came back to Berwick and was employed by the state highway for two years before working at ACF for forty-five years until retiring. After the war, he married the love of his life, Mary, and built their home where they raised their family and resided for 72 years. Always one to stay busy and help where needed, Peter was an active member at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church. He volunteered with the Holy Name Society, helping to build the park and also served as PTA President while his sons attended parochial school. Peter cherished family above all else, and often shared stories of his children and grandchildren. He had a passion for enjoying life to the fullest and a fondness for golf. He made the best damn Manhattans. Peter is survived by his son, David, and daughter-in-law, Jane, of Lebanon, and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, and a son, Dr. John Horvat. Peter was larger-than-life to those who knew him, able to fill the room with his smile and his jokes. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family. A Panachyda will be conducted at 9:30 A.M. Friday, October 25 at the Kelchner-McMichael-Baker Funeral Home, 119-121 E. Third Street, Berwick. Divine Liturgy will follow at 10:00 A.M. at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, 706 N. Warren Street, Berwick. Reverend Roman Petryshak will officiate. Burial is at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Ukrainian Cemetery. Online messages of love and support can be left at www.kelchnerfuneralhome.com.
