Michael Zenzel, Jr.

July 17, 1927 — October 5, 2017

Michael Zenzel, Jr., 90 of North Centre Township, passed away peacefully with his family at his side Thursday morning, October 5, 2017 at Maria Hall in Danville. He was born July 17, 1927 in Berwick, a son to the late Michael and Mary (Jurbala) Zenzel. Mike loved to work. He began at an early age caddying at the Berwick Golf Club after school. He then worked as a milkman at the Berwick Creamery before serving in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he worked at the former National Select Company in Berwick and later at the Berwick Forge and Fabricating Company as a welder. In 1951 he opened Zen's General Store on Rt. 93 and operated the business with his first wife, Mary for over 30 years. The next ten years, before retiring, he spent working for the food service at Bloomsburg University. Mike's faith and family meant everything to him. He enjoyed hunting, square dancing, and especially spending time with friends and family. Surviving Mike is his loving wife of 34 years, the former Carol McMichael. Also surviving are son, Michael Zenzel III and wife, Susan of Eyers Grove, daughter, Sandra Beishline and husband, Frank of Stillwater, 3 step-daughters: Diane Chyko and husband, Jim of Bloomsburg, Cathy Johnson and husband, Daniel of Bloomsburg, and Brenda Mentzer and husband, Terry of FL., 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, sister, Mary Maholick of Berwick, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Mike in death in 1981 was his first wife, the former Mary Ann Ezzyk. Also preceding were 2 brothers: Frank Zenzel, Sr. and Daniel Zenzel, Sr. A loving and devoted husband, dad, brother and friend, Mike will be greatly missed by all who knew him. All are welcome at visitation from 9-11 AM Saturday, October 7th at the Kelchner-McMichael-Baker Funeral Home, 119-121 E. 3rd St., Berwick. Michael's funeral will follow immediately at 11. Pastor Melody Sell of Hidlay Lutheran Church will serve as the celebrant. Burial with full military honors will follow at the Russian Orthodox Cemetery, Briar Creek Township. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in Michael's memory be sent to either the Hidlay Evangelical Lutheran Church, 179 Hidlay Church Rd., Bloomsburg, PA. 17815, or the Holy Annunciation Orthodox Church,1228 2nd Ave., Berwick, PA. 18603.
