Mary Horvat

December 30, 1921 — September 6, 2018

On Thursday, September 6, 2018 Mary Horvat, 96, of Berwick, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother passed away peacefully at her residence. She was born December 30, 1921 in Berwick, a daughter to the late Pauline and John Nicholas, Sr. Mary was a graduate of the Geisinger School of Nursing. She served as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II and was stationed in Virginia and the District of Columbia. After the war she continued her career as a nurse at the Berwick Hospital, a private duty nurse, and a nurse at the former Wise Potato Chip Company from where she retired. An active member at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Ukranian Catholic Church, she never missed an opportunity to help make pierogis and paska. In her senior years, she passed those and other recipies on to her granddaughters. Mary loved cultivating roses. She was especially fond of the yellow and pink varieties. She also was known for her untiring volunteer work at her church and throughout Berwick. Surviving Mary is her loving husband of over72 years, Peter. Also surviving is a son, David and wife, Jane and their children of Lebanon. As well as her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Dr. John Horvat. Mary was a quick-witted and energetic woman who had unending love for her family, friends, and those who were fortunate enough to have known her. She will be greatly missed. A Parastas will be conducted at 10:00 AM Monday, September 10, 2018 at the Kelchner-McMichael-Baker Funeral Home, 119-121 E. 3rd Street, Berwick. Divine Liturgy will follow at 11:00 AM at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Ukranian Catholic Church, 706 N. Warren Street, Berwick. Burial is at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Cemetery.
