Mary E. (Evans) Wright

Mary (Evans) Wright, 99, of Berwick and formerly Bloomsburg, passed away peacefully January 30, 2024 at Brookdale Senior Living in Bloomsburg. Born in Harrisburg on July 27, 1924, she was a daughter to the late James W. and Mary B. (Ott) Evans.

Mary was a graduate of Susquehanna Township High School, Class of 1942, and continued her education at Pennsylvania Business College in Harrisburg. She and her dear friend, Helen Hopple, operated the H & M Romper Room daycare in her Sherwood Village residence. Mary had also served as secretary for the Pennsylvania Guernsey Association. She was a faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church in Espy. She was also a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the Berwick Civic Club, the Red Hat Society, and the Bloomsburg Elkettes, as well as a life member of the Geisinger-Bloomsburg and Berwick Hospital Auxiliaries. A member of the Berwick Golf Club, she was an avid golfer who enjoyed her time on the greens well into her 90’s. Mary was a consummate bridge player, enjoyed reading, gardening and loved to dance. Her greatest joy, however, was her beloved family, by whom she will be deeply missed.

Surviving Mary are her daughters: Cathy (Wright) Dowd and husband, William, of Paxinos and Patricia Wright of Bloomsburg; grandchildren: Michael Dowd, Stacy Dowd Albert, and Evan Low; and great-grandchildren: Katie, Jack and Ian.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, John L. “Jack” Wright, who passed away March 31, 1998. She was also preceded in death by her son, James Wright, her sister, Edna Carns, and her brother, Edward Evans.

Mary’s Funeral Service will be 11 AM Monday, February 5, 2024 at St. John Lutheran Church, 2575 Old Berwick Road, Bloomsburg, PA 17815. Her pastor, Reverend Gordon Smith will officiate. Friends will be received from 10 AM until the time of the service at 11 AM. Her interment at New Rosemont Cemetery is private.
