Marjorie M. (Thomas) Carrathers Gottshall, 100, formerly of Berwick, passed away peacefully October 27, 2017 at Geisinger Bloomsburg Health Care Center. Born in Berwick on May 10, 1917, she was a daughter to the late John E. and Ella Cecelia (Keiper) Thomas. Marjorie attended Berwick Area Schools, after which she worked at the Dockey Shirt Factory. In 1935 Marjorie married William H. Carrathers. She taught Sunday school at St. John's Lutheran Church and detailed automobiles. In 1949 Marjorie founded the Carrathers Store, which became a popular destination for hoagies. Bill and Marge worked the store together until his passing in 1977. Marjorie continued to work at the store until 1997. In 1982, Marjorie married the late Edwin J. Gottshall with whom she enjoyed 25 years of marriage prior to his passing in 2006. Marjorie was an active member of Bower Memorial United Methodist Church where she participated in the quilting club. Additionally, she was an avid bowler who took part in the Ladies League at Stenko's. A kind and caring woman of great faith, she will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. Surviving Marjorie are son: Martin Carrathers and wife, Susan, of Berwick, grandsons: Charles M. Edwards and wife, Renee of CA and Timothy J. Edwards and husband, B.J. Krivanek of IL, granddaughters: Jennifer A. Timbrell and husband, Shawn of Berwick and Laurel Bushman and husband, Douglas of OK, great-grandchildren: Ellen Celli and husband, Stephen of Berwick, Claire Timbrell and Amelia Timbrell, both of Berwick, Nicholas Bushman and wife, Joanne of IL, Ashley Walter and husband, Matthew of CA, great-great-granddaughter: Corrine Grace Bushman, son-in-law: Charles E. Edwards, grandson-in-law: Neil Whitmoyer, step-daughter: Anne Marie Hess and husband, Robert, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husbands, Marjorie was preceded in death by her son: William H. Carrathers, Jr., who died in infancy, daughter: Ruth Edwards, granddaughter: Karen Carrathers Whitmoyer, brothers: Dave Thomas, Ed Thomas, William "Bates" Thomas, and Richard Thomas, and sisters: Eudora Gangwere, Ruth Scott, Gwendolyn Brown, Jean Kemper, and Betty Stimeling. Memorial contributions in Marjorie's name may be made to Bower Memorial United Methodist Church, 140 E. Second Street, Berwick, PA 18603. All are invited to join Marjorie's family for her visitation at 10:00-11:00 A.M, Saturday, November 4th at the Kelchner-McMichael-Baker Funeral Home, 119-121 East Third Street, Berwick. A memorial service will immediately follow visitation. Pastor Ralph Hartenbach will serve as the celebrant. Burial is at Rose Lawn Cemetery.
