Margaret Alice Stephens

Margaret Alice Stephens, 92, of Berwick, passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at Berwick Retirement Village II. She was born October 5, 1925 in Berwick, a daughter to the late Nathan E. and Margaret (Junk) Arey. Margaret graduated from Berwick High School in 1943. She then continued her education at the Geisinger School of Nursing under the U. S. Cadet Nurses Corps program, graduating as a registered nurse in 1946. She worked for years at the old Berwick Hospital, also for Dr. J. G. Fear for 6 years and Dr. Ali Alley for 26 years. She retired in 1987. Fishing trips to Canada, including camping along the St. Lawrence River were among the things Margaret enjoyed. She also loved to cook, quilt, and do puzzles. Everyone knew not to call her at 7:30 during the week, as that time was spent watching Jeopardy. Margaret was a member of Bethany United Methodist for over 81 years. She served there as a Sunday School teacher for 45 years and a visitation minister for 18 years. She was a former Chairperson of the Methodist Council of Ministries and a member of the Pioneer Sunday School Class. She also was a Past Matron of the Eastern Star. Margaret is survived by her daughter-in-law, Linda (Susie) Stephens, granddaughter, Brooke Fay and husband, George of VA., grandson, Christopher Stephens and wife, Ola of Berwick, and grandson, Matthew Stephens and wife, Nicole of York. She is further survived by great-grandchildren: Brandon and Justin Whitebread, Alexis and Ella Stephens of Berwick, Keira Stephens of York, and Chloe Stoss of Wilkes-Barre. She also has a sister, Madge Wright of Coatesville and daughter, Nancy Johnson as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and brother, Miner Arey, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Howard Stephens and her son, Alan Stephens with whom she now has been joyfully reunited. Margaret's funeral is 11:00 AM Saturday, June 23rd at Bethany United Methodist Church, 116 Summerhill Ave., Berwick. Her pastor, Reverend Stephen Portner will serve as officiant. Friends may call at the church from 9:00 AM until time of the funeral. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in her honor to Bethany United Methodist Church of Berwick, PA.
