Margaret (Slanski) Carter

November 17, 1936 — March 6, 2018

Margaret Ann (Slanski) Carter, 81, of Berwick, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at Fritzingertown Senior Living Community in Drums, where she had been a resident for three years. She was born in Mocanaqua, PA, on November 17, 1936, to the late Michael and Margaret (Sabatos) Slanski. Margaret attended Berwick High School and graduated with the Berwick High School Class of 1954. After high school, Margaret attended Nesbitt Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Kingston, PA, graduating as a registered nurse in 1957. Margaret was employed by the Berwick Hospital as a registered nurse in obstetrics and in the nursery from 1957-1959. From 1967-1974, Margaret worked as an office nurse for Dr. Ferdinand Szabo. In 1974, Dr. Ala Almashat joined the practice forming Berwick Surgical Associates, where Margaret continued to work until 1993. Being a long-time member of Immaculate Conception B.V.M. Church (St. Mary's), Margaret actively served her church community as a member of the liturgy committee, as a greeter, and as a sacristan. Margaret's attention to detail served her well in the 25 years in which she caringly laundered and pressed the altar cloths. Margaret was a dedicated worker at the church fish dinners and the parish festival. For many years, Margaret chaired or served on the planning committee for the BHS Class of 1954 reunions, which led to monthly class breakfasts that she faithfully attended. Her affiliations include Senior Circle and Beta Sigma Phi National Service Sorority. As a 60-year member of Beta Sigma Phi, Margaret shared many enjoyable times and formed lifelong friendships with her sorority sisters who have continually provided joy and support to Margaret and her family. Margaret enjoyed reading, crocheting, knitting, and gardening. Always one to be active, she participated in the Silver Sneakers exercise classes at the Berwick YMCA for many years. Margaret was known for her kindness and thoughtfulness; she had a big heart and a great love of family. One of Margaret's greatest joys was spending time with family, especially with her grandsons, Tyler and Jackson. Margaret enjoyed the company of friends and visits on the porch with neighbors. Margaret shared with her husband a love of Berwick Bulldog and Notre Dame Fighting Irish football. She loyally attended Berwick Bulldog football games as a longtime season ticket holder. Margaret is survived by her son, Dr. Edward Carter, and his wife, Suzanne, of Topton, PA, daughter, Diane Carter of Berwick, grandsons, Tyler and Jackson, twin sister, Theresa Dent of Berwick, and several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57-years, Francis D. "Chick" Carter, and her step-mother, Edythe H. Slanski. Viewings will be held Wednesday evening from 6-8 P.M. at the Kelchner-McMichael-Baker Funeral Home, 119-121 East Third Street, Berwick and Thursday morning from 10 AM until 10:45 at St. Mary's Church. A prayer service will be held Wednesday evening at 8:00 at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 A.M. at St. Mary's Church, 1730 Fowler Ave., Berwick, by her pastor, Fr. Francis Tamburro, as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery. Contributions can be made in Margaret's memory to McBride Memorial Library or Berwick YMCA. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of the Evergreen Unit at Fritzingertown Senior Living Community and to SpiriTrust Lutheran Home Care and Hospice for the compassionate care provided to Margaret.
