Lois Gruver Gassert passed away Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at Emeritus at Bloomsburg, where she had been a resident. She was born on November 18, 1919 on her parents' farm near Mainville, PA where she lived until she went to college. She was the daughter of the late Lester Henry and Henrietta Knecht Gruver. Lois had one brother, Henry H. Gruver, who preceded her in death. Lois graduated from Mifflin Township High School in Mifflinville in 1937 as valedictorian of her class. Lois graduated from Bloomsburg State Teachers College (now Bloomsburg University) in 1941. She began her teaching career in a one-room elementary school in Briar Creek Township that had grades one through six. Lois taught first grade at the elementary school in Mifflinville (Central Columbia School District) for 35 years. Lois married Oscar F. Gassert in 1945. The couple had two daughters, Jane and Kathy. Jane Halsey and her husband, John, reside in Mount Vernon, WA. Kathy Lawton and her husband, Jim, live in Rochester, NY. Kathy and Jim Lawton have two children: Patricia and Zachary. Lois was a life-long member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Mifflinville where she was very active until recent years. Lois was a member of the Eastern Star of Berwick. Her funeral is 11:00 AM Saturday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 5th and Race Streets, Mifflinville. Friends may call at the church from 10:00 AM until time of the service. Pastor Joel L.Zeiders will serve as the officiant. Burial will follow at the Mifflinville Cemetery.
