John Michael Gryshuk, Sr., 94, of Ferris Avenue, Berwick, passed away Thursday evening September 25, 2014 at the Berwick Retirement Village II where he had been a resident for one month. John was born on February 26, 1920 in Berwick. He was the son of the late Michael Gryshchuk and Elizabeth (Pataki) Gryshchuk. He was preceded in death by brothers, Joseph Gryshchuk and William Gray. John resided on Ferris Ave. for 78 years. He bragged about being Ferris Avenue's oldest resident and one who lived there the longest. He was surrounded by wonderful neighbors who he appreciated greatly. John was a World War II Veteran. After completing Officer Candidate School, he was commissioned a First Lieutenant. John was deployed to the North African theater and then to Europe, spending a great deal of time in Italy. During this time he was promoted to the rank of Captain. John and his wife, Arlene Massina Gryshuk, recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary in July. In addition to his wife, Arlene, John is survived by two sons, John Gryshuk Jr. of South Carolina and Alan Gryshuk of East Greenville, PA and their wives, Mary and Deborah. John adored his four grandchildren: Amy, Katie, Megan and Johnny, as well as his three great grandchildren, Ella Mia, Lucas, and Ian. John's third great grandchild, Ian Erickson Gryshuk, was born six hours after his passing. John is also survived by this sister-in-law, Anne Gray, his niece, Kelly, and nephews, Michael, Thomas and William. Throughout John's life, he was surrounded by his loving family and during the last month and final hours the Gryshuks and Grays were by his bedside. A Memorial Service will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1600 Fowler Ave., Berwick. Pastor Martha Sue Moll will serve as the officiant.
