Jesse Guy Whitenight

April 29, 1929 — September 18, 2015

Jesse Guy Whitenight, 86 of Berwick, died peacefully at his home with his family at his side Friday, September 18, 2015. He was born in Bendertown April 29, 1929, a son to the late Harold Guy and Florence Catherine (Lewis) Whitenight. Jesse was a hard worker for most of his life. He worked at a weaving mill in Bloomsburg as well as the former Magee Carpet Company and Wise Snack Foods from where he retired. Even after retiring, he continued working part-time at Boyer's Market, Weis Market, and Miller's Furniture. His interests included fishing, washing and polishing cars, and country music. Little Jimmie Dickens was no doubt his favorite singer. Many Sundays he could be found at Evergreen Speedway or Columbia Park with his family listening to country music and enjoying a picnic lunch. Later in life, Jesse played the same music for his grandchildren. His family meant the world to Jesse. He was a very protective and caring man who loved his Lord and Savior. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Surviving Jesse is his devoted and loving wife of over sixty years, the former Edna Samsel. Also surviving are daughters: Debbie A. Bower and her husband, Keith of Mechanicsburg and Holly Steward and her husband, Howard of Berwick, son, Jesse Charles Whitenight and his wife, Carol of Berwick, grandchildren: Melissa Traugh and Christine Rider, who resided in Jesse's home throughout their childhood years until their marriages, Jesseca Whitenight, Nicholas Bower, Devin Toledo, Rochelle Bower, Caitlin Whitenight, and Luke Whitenight, great-grandchildren: Cassidy, Colton, and Carson Rider, Haley and Nathan Traugh, Lily and Gracie Eisenhower, and Avery Essparo, and sisters: Elizabeth, Pearl and Pat. As well as his parents, Jesse was preceded in death by brothers: Harold, Robert, David and Donald and sisters: Francis, Betty, Madeline, and Marie. Visitation is 6-8 PM Monday at the Kelchner-McMichael-Baker Funeral Home, 119-121 E. 3rd St., Berwick. Jesse's funeral is 11 AM Tuesday at Calvary United Methodist Church, 1135 Orange St., Berwick. Friends may call at the church from 10 AM until time of the service. Pastor Dennis McCracken will serve as the officiant. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Cemetery.
