Jerry L. Owens, Sr.

August 16, 1949 — September 6, 2017

Jerry L. Owens, Sr., 68, of Berwick, died unexpectedly in his home Wednesday, September 6, 2017. Born in Grundy, VA on August 16, 1949, he was a son to the late Berton and Edith Mae (Dale) Owens. Jerry attended Grundy High School in Grundy, VA. He relocated to the Berwick area in 1968. It was here that he owned and operated his landscaping business, Owens Landscaping, for nearly 40 years. Jerry also worked at Dana Corp. in Berwick and Heller's Gas. He was a life member of the West Berwick Hose Co. and a social member of the Berwick V.F.W., the Catholic War Vets, the Slavonic American Club, the Berwick Russian Glee Club, the Maria Assunta, the Sons of the AMVETS, and the Sons of the American Legion. In his few spare moments, he enjoyed hunting, watching NASCAR racing, riding and detailing his motorcycle, and most important to him; spending time with his friends and family. A hard-working, caring, and compassionate man, he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Surviving Jerry are sons: Rick Rice of VA and Troy Rice of Nanticoke, daughters: Renee Strouse and husband, Steven, of FL and Tuesday Owens of Berwick, brothers: C. Melvin Owens and B. Eugene Owens, both of VA, sister: Darlene Mullins and husband, Scott, of VA, eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by son: Jerry "Booper" Owens, Jr., grandson Robbie Rice, and brothers: Danny W. Owens and Phillip T. Owens. All are invited to join Jerry's family for his viewing 6:00-8:00 P.M. Sunday, September 10 at the Kelchner-McMichael-Baker Funeral Home 119-121 East Third Street, Berwick. Jerry's funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, September 11, also at the funeral home. Pastor Mike Delp of Commonwealth Home Health and Hospice of Berwick will officiate. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick. Memorial contributions in Jerry's name can be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123.
