James E. Meighan

James E. Meighan, 79, of Berwick, passed away Sunday, August 13 at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, surrounded by his family. Born in Wilkes-Barre on June 12, 1938, he was a son to the late Emmett and Letha (Harrison) Meighan. James graduated from Berwick High School in 1956 and then enlisted in the US Air Force, in which he served for five and a half years. Jim served with the Berwick Police Department for 22 years. A man of many talents, he had also worked at the Consolidated Cigar Corp, the United States Postal Service, the Berwick Ambulance Association, and as security at the Bloomsburg Fair. He was a member of Bower Memorial United Methodist Church, the Fraternal Order of Police (Lodge #52), the American Legion, the Berwick Fire Police, and Knapp Lodge #462. Additionally, Jim was a life member of Ranger Hose Company, where he was a past assistant chief, and was very proud of his involvement with the Berwick Area Swimming Pool Association. He served on Berwick Borough Council for 13 years and volunteered his time to ensure that flags were placed on the graves of veterans. A kind man who always put his community ahead of himself, he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Surviving Jim is his loving wife of 19 years, the former Terri Petro. Also surviving is his son: James J. Meighan of Berwick, daughters: Tina Roth and husband, Gary, Jr., of Mifflinville, and Jenn Eveland and husband, Marvin, Jr., of Berwick, grandchildren: Cory Roth of MD, Damon Makar of Lime Ridge, Niall and Cassy Makar, both of Berwick, and Mitchell and Evan Meighan, both of Berwick, and brother-in-law: Brian Petro. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by sons: John Emmett and Emmett John Meighan, daughter: Destiny Meighan, and sister: Shirley Meighan Fenstermacher. All are invited to join Jim's family for visitation from 6-8 P.M. on Thursday, August 17 at the Kelchner-McMichael-Baker Funeral Home, 119-121 East Third Street, Berwick. Memorial contributions in Jim's name can be made to the Ranger Hose Company, 208 E. Front Street, Berwick, PA 18603 or to the Berwick Area Swimming Pool Association, 6084 Park Road, Berwick, PA 18603.
