George F Yerges

George F. Yerges, 92, of Scott Township, passed away peacefully Monday, December 17, 2018 at Sunset Ridge Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center Bloomsburg, where he was a resident. He was born October 17, 1926 in Berwick, a son of the late Thomas W. and Hazel (Van Tassel) Yerges. George lived in Berwick for most of his life. He was a graduate of Berwick High School in the Class of 1944 and also attended Bloomsburg State Teachers College for several years. He resided at his Park Blvd. address since March, 1951. Mr. Yerges was employed as a supervisor in several departments at Berwick ACF until it's closing in 1962. He then was employed for over 20 years at Berwick Forge and Fabricating as an estimator in the engineering department before retiring in 1986. He also was a part-time employee at First Keystone National Bank, Berwick. He attended the First Baptist Church, Berwick. Mr. Yerges was an Aviation Machinist Mate Second Class in the United States Navy and served in the American Theater during WWII. He and his wife, the former Winifred Bailey, celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on September 17, 2007. Surviving are sons: Kenneth Yerges and wife, Karen, of Bloomsburg and Carl F. Yerges and wife, Linda, of Berwick. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Jennifer Powers and husband, Edward, Berwick, Kenneth M. Yerges and wife, Jennifer, Dover, PA., Melissa K. and Allison M. Yerges, Steelton, PA, and Michael T. Yerges, Bloomsburg, PA, and four great-grandchildren: Kevin and Matthew Powers and Bradyn and Gracie Yerges. In addition to his parents and wife, Winnifred, he was preceded in death by a brother, W. Roy Yerges and a sister, Mae Schnerr. George was the last surviving member of his immediate family. All are welcome to join George's family at his viewing 10:00-11:00 AM Saturday, December 22nd at the Kelchner-McMichael-Baker Funeral Home, 119-121 E. 3rd. St., Berwick. George's funeral will immediately follow the viewing. Rev. Dr. Lee Barnhardt will serve as the officiant. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Cemetery. Contributions in George's memory may be sent to Columbia Montour Home Hospice, 410 Glenn Ave., Bloomsburg, PA. 17815.
