Fern S. Smith, 92, formerly of Mifflinville, passed away Sunday, January 8, 2017 at Messiah Village in Mechanicsburg, where she had been a resident. She was born March 15, 1924 in Hetlerville, a daughter to the late Raymond and Virgil (Knecht) Mowery. Fern was a graduate of the Empire Beauty School in Hazleton. She worked as a hairdresser for various employers before opening her own shop at her home in Mifflinville in 1955, which she ran for the next 50 plus years. Her work ethic was strong as was her faith in God, which was attested to by her near perfect attendance for many years at the Mifflinville United Methodist Church. Surviving Fern is her son, Gary and his wife, Jacqueline of Harrisburg, granddaughter, Meggan Bright and her husband, Colin of Harrisburg, and grandson, Brett Smith and his fiancé, Becca Grove of MD. As well as her parents, Fern was preceded in death in 1990 by her loving husband of 43 years, Harold. Also preceding were a sister, Mildred and brothers, Elwood and Lee. Visitation is 11:00 to 12:00 PM Friday, January 13 at the Mifflinville United Methodist Church, 4th & Market Streets, Mifflinville followed by her funeral service at noon. Pastor John Bondus will serve as the officiant. Burial will follow at the Mifflinville Cemetery.
