Elmer R Dehaven

Elmer R. DeHaven, 89 of Lime Ridge, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at Berwick Retirement Village. He was born April 21, 1924 in Nescopeck, a son to the late Raymond and Mae (Swank) DeHaven. Immediately after graduating from Berwick High School in 1943, he entered the Navy and served until April, 1946. He then worked at the Berwick ACF until taking a job at the Magee Carpet Company, which he held for 29 years, and then worked for another 13 years at Wise-Borden foods in themaintenance department before retiring. Elmer was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lime Ridge, where he served as a trustee for many years. He enjoyed helping to make candy Easter eggs for the church's annual fund raiser and going to Bible study. Deer hunting, fishing, camping, and going on vacations to the beach were among his favorite things to do. He also was an active member of the Susquehanna Valley World War Two Veterans. Surviving Elmer are his loving wife of sixty-eight years, the former Betty Jane Heaps and daughters, Kathryn J. Dehaven of Lime Ridge and Bonnie Cheeka and her husband, Louis of Hazleton. Besides his parents, Elmer was preceded in death by a brother, John and a sister, Dorothy. As well as his family and friends, Elmer will be deeply missed by his "best friend dog," Angel. Visitation will be 6-8 PM Sunday, April 13 at the First United Methodist Church of Lime Ridge. Elmer's funeral service is 11 AM Monday, April 14 at the church. His pastor, Terence J. Brosius, and Eileen Chapin will serve as the officiants. Burial will follow at Elan Memorial Park. Contributions in Elmer\'s memory can be sent to his church.
