Ellen E. Betz, of Berwick, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at the Berwick Hospital Center Emergency Room, a day before her 96th birthday. She was born February 1, 1921 in Mocanaqua, a daughter to the late Freas and Ellen (Fink) Smith. Ellen was a homemaker for most of her adult life, who enjoyed reading and crocheting. Her faith and love of Jesus were exceptional. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church and attended services over many years wherever she was living: Shickshinny, Nanticoke, or Berwick. She also taught adult Sunday School classes for over 30 years. Surviving Ellen are her daughters: Mary Ann Hill and husband, Floyd of Berwick and Janet Schimmel of Mountain Top, son: Duane Betz and wife, Judy of Berwick, step-sons: Lester Betz and wife, Brenda of Hobbie and Leroy Betz and wife, Linda of Hobbie, 3 sisters: Dorothy, Ruth, and Sylvia, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Preceding Ellen in death were her first husband, Bruce Rinehimer in 1953 and her second husband, Lester C. Betz, Sr. in 2007. She was also preceded by son: Dale, daughter: Loretta, brothers: Millard and Claude, sisters: Magdalene, Edith, Beatrice, Mabel, Loretta, Marian, Mary, Faith, and Helen, and son-in-law: Bob. Ellen's funeral is 11:00 AM Saturday at the Berwick Assembly of God, 801 E. 5th Street, Berwick. Friends may call at the church from 10:00 until time of the service. Reverend Linda Paisley will serve as the officiant. Burial will follow at the Pine Grove Cemetery.
