Edith V. Martin, 81, of Briar Creek Township, passed away suddenly Saturday, March 7, 2026. Born in Prospect Park, NJ on October 26, 1944, she was a daughter to the late William and Lena (Raap) Vanderveen.
Following graduation from Washington High School in NJ, Edie continued her education, first at Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ, and then Nursing School in Glens Falls, New York. In 1963, Edie married the love of her life, Wayne J. Martin, with whom she would raise a family and share over 60 years of marriage. The family home in NJ was a warm, welcoming place where neighborhood kids, who called her “Squeeze” for the hugs she would dispense, were always welcome for a visit and a meal. She had worked as an RN in Newton NJ after nursing school and later as a home health nurse for many years; she had also been employed by the US Postal Service, serving as the assistant postmaster close to the family home in Changewater, NJ. When Wayne and Edie move to Pennsylvania, 20 years ago, she became a member of Ebenezer Faith Bible Church, where she enjoyed serving in the nursery. Having grown up on a dairy farm, Edie never forgot her roots. In her youth, she had been active in 4H, where she showed sheep and later raised sheep, chickens and beef on the small family farm. She took great pride in her small orchard and garden, harvesting apples and vegetables which she also enjoyed preserving and canning. Edie liked cooking and baking, and was known for her delicious apple pies, cookies and meatloaf. She loved animals, and had a special love of Golden Retrievers, of which she had been a breeder for many years. Her greatest joy, however, was her family, by whom she will be deeply missed.
Surviving Edith are her husband, Wayne J. Martin; son, Carl B. Martin; grandson, Erik J. Martin; and her brother, Peter Vanderveen.
In addition to her parents, Edie was preceded in death by son, Peter J. Martin; daughter-in-law, Sharon Martin; and siblings: John, Albertina “Skip”, and George.
Edith’s services are private and at the convenience of her family. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to Ebenezer Faith Bible Church, 630 State Route 93, Berwick, PA 18603. The Kelchner, McMichael & Readler Funeral Home, Inc., of Berwick, is honored to serve the Martin family. Online messages of comfort and support may be left at www.kelchnerfuneralhome.com.
