Mrs. Doris L. (Tipton) Baughman

March 8, 1925 — October 22, 2018

Doris Leora (Tipton) Baughman was born March 8, 1925 in Juniata, a suburb of the city of Altoona, PA. Her parents were Samuel Ross Tipton and his wife Amanda Maude Burkholder. As an infant, Doris was baptized a Christian in Grace Evangelical Church. Throughout her childhood and youth, Doris was regular in her attendance and an active participant in all the church activities, especially youth and young adult activities. Early in life, with the assistance of her older sister "BeBe", she learned to play the piano and became an accomplished pianist. She developed a beautiful alto singing voice, sang in the church choir and high school chorus. With her sister and brother-in-law, they formed a popular trio, singing frequently in their home church and churches throughout the city of Altoona. Doris graduated from Altoona High School, class of 1943. Her course of study was called the "Commercial Course", and thereby she became a well-trained secretary. Upon graduation, she became office manager and secretary to the Principal of Keith Junior High School, Altoona. Her singing abilities and secretarial skill proved invaluable for the rest of her life. On June 28, 1946, she married her husband of 72 years, Rev. Warren L. Baughman, Jr. Doris was a loyal supporter for her husband's pastoral service. She sang in all the church choirs where he was pastor, assisted church secretaries in the church offices, and was the district secretary during his two terms as District Superintendent. Doris and Warren are the parents of two children: Ronald E. Baughman (married to Mary (Perry) Baughman) of Dallas, Texas, and Kathy Ann (Baughman) Frey of Berwick. They are the grandparents to five grandchildren: Rev. Michael J. Baughman (married to Rev. Rachel (Griffin) Baughman), Ryan P. Frey, LeeAnn (Frey) Stine (married to Nathan Stine), and Brandon S. Frey (married to Sgt. Sabrina (Sheffy) Frey. There are eight great-grandchildren: Alton Frey, Griffin Shoemaker, Becca Shoemaker, Sylvia Baughman, Thomas Baughman, Leora Stine, Elijah Stine, and Isaac Stine. There is one nephew, Jerry R. Brubaker (married to Lois Bailard). We also wish to recognize our dear friends, Rich Briggs, his wife Sherre, and their daughter, Dakota. Doris is predeceased by her parents, Samuel R. and A. Maude Tipton, her sister, M. Beatrice (BeBe) Brubaker, her brother-in-law, Kenneth R. Brubaker, and an infant sister (2 months old), Mildred Wilmina. Doris grew up in a family where love prevailed and every family member was cherished dearly. That trait became her characteristic. She loved people, lovingly related to all people and in turn, was loved by all who knew her. God's world is a far better place because in it for 93 years was a true personification of divine love. All are welcome to join Doris's family for her viewings 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, October 25 and 1:30-2:30 PM Friday, October 26 at Bower Memorial United Methodist Church, 140 E. Second Street, Berwick. Her funeral will be 2:30 PM Friday, October 26, also at the church. Rev. Ralph B. Hartenbach and her grandson, Rev. Michael J. Baughman, will officiate. Burial at Pine Grove Cemetery will follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Bower Memorial United Methodist Church Memorial Fund. The Kelchner-McMichael-Baker Funeral Home is honored to serve the Baughman family. Online messages of love and support can be left at www.kelchnerfuneralhome.com.
