Donald E. Bowers, 82, of Berwick, PA, passed away on April 19, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and those close to him.
Born on August 6, 1943, in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, “Donnie” was the son of the late Karl and Anne Bowers. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kathleen, in 2018, and his sister, Carole Erb of Coal Township, Pennsylvania.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Kelley Bowers of Point Pleasant, New Jersey, and Kierstie Keller of Rye, New Hampshire; his cherished granddaughter, Vayleigh Keller; his brother and sister-in-law, Barry and Jeanne Bowers of Pottstown, Pennsylvania; as well as nieces and nephews.
Donnie was a three-sport athlete at Shamokin High School, graduating in 1961. He later attended Bloomsburg University, where he pursued business studies, and went on to build a career in sales. But it was beyond his work where he truly found joy and left a lasting impact.
A lifelong lover of baseball, Donnie’s passion for the game began at just eight years old when he first stepped onto a Little League field. That early love grew into a remarkable journey spanning decades—as a player, mentor, and coach. He played American Legion baseball and later semi-professional ball, deepening both his skill and appreciation for the game.
It was through coaching that Donnie, known to many as “Coach Bowers” or the “Legend”, truly left his mark. From Little League to Teener League and high school baseball, he devoted countless hours to developing young athletes—not only in skill, but in confidence and character. As a batting practice pitcher and infield/outfield coach, he contributed to championship teams and helped guide players to the Teener League World Series. He spent seven years coaching at Berwick High School and remained involved with the Senior American Legion team, always driven by his love of the game and the players he mentored. To bring the game to home, he organized mushball games with a close-knit group of friends, cherishing the spirited rivalry between the Kingsmen and the Nightowls and the friendships that grew from it.
Outside of baseball, Donnie found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. He took great pride in caring for his lawn and flowers, and only enjoyed winter because of decorating for Christmas with a perfectly shaped tree. He loved being in the sun and took pride in his tan, enjoying trips to the beach and often sporting a Hawaiian shirt as if he were already on island time. A fan of the Beach Boys, his easygoing spirit reflected the music he loved. Whether he was watching a movie with his homemade popcorn or grilling burgers on the back deck with a hoboken knob, he treasured time spent with others. More than anything, he loved conversation—whether it was a chance meeting at the grocery store or an afternoon spent with family and friends.
Donnie will be remembered for his steady presence, his love of the game, and the countless lives he touched along the way.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Donnie’s life at a Funeral Service at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at Kelchner, McMichael & Readler Funeral Home, Inc., 119–121 E. Third Street, Berwick. Reverend William T. Barbee will officiate. His viewing will be held from 4:00 PM until the time of service. Guests are welcome to wear a Hawaiian shirt or a baseball jersey in his honor.
Interment will be at Roselawn Cemetery on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at 11:00 AM for those who wish to gather at his final resting place.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Berwick Area School District, with contributions designated for a baseball scholarship fund in his name to honor his dedication to coaching and to support future student-athletes.
Donnie’s legacy will live on in every player he coached and every life he impacted.
