Cynthia H. Smart

Cynthia H. “Cindy” (Vreeland) Smart, 78, of Berwick, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 15, 2026 at her home. Born in Paterson, NJ on September 13, 1947 she was a daughter of the late Eugene R. and Harriet (Snelson) Vreeland.

Cindy attended Boonton High School. Afterwards she spent years serving as a missionary and singing with the musical group “The New Folk,” often performing at college campuses and military bases throughout the United States. On September 22, 1973, she wed David A. Smart, with whom she would share 52 years of marriage. She was a woman of great faith and a member of Cross Point Bible Church in Berwick. Like other members of the human race, Cindy was a complex spiritual being and was well aware of that complexity. She had a tender and kindly spirit, which also led to her being vulnerable to pain and heartache in life. Early in life, she heard the Gospel of the Lord, Jesus Christ and through faith availed herself of God’s grace, love, and kindness. Her husband, David, has no doubt that he will see her again, in that heavenly realm. Christians call this phenomenon “The Blessed Hope.” Cindy’s desire was that all people would know this hope.

Cindy is survived by her husband, David A. Smart. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy O’Brien.

All are welcome to join Cindy’s family for her funeral 11 AM Saturday, March 21, 2026 at Cross Point Bible Church, 1426 Spring Garden Avenue, Berwick, PA 18603. Pastor Brad Iverson will officiate. Friends will be received from 10 AM until the time of the service at 11 AM. Interment at the Montville Dutch Reformed Churchyard in Montville, NJ, Morris County, will be Monday, March 23 at 11 AM. Memorial contributions in Cindy’s name may be made to Cross Point Bible Church at the address above.
