Clara Jean (Hough) Smith

CLARA JEAN SMITH Clara Jean (Hough) Smith, 87, formerly of Berwick, died Sunday, September 8, 2019 at Brookdale Assisted Living, Bloomsburg, where she had been a resident since 2011. Born August 31, 1932 in Berwick, she was a daughter of the late Barton and Evelyn (Bomboy) Hough. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Robert W. "Bob" Smith on February 21, 2011. Clara was a 1950 graduate of Berwick High School and from the Williamsport School of Nursing in 1953 where she earned her Registered Nurses degree. She also took additional courses at Wilkes University. She worked as a Registered Nurse and Director of Nursing at the former Retreat State Hospital. Following the closure of Retreat she transferred to Danville State Hospital until her retirement. Clara and her late husband Bob had also lived in Wilkes-Barre for many years. They also owned a summer home at Lake Pinecrest. She enjoyed playing cards and crocheting. She was a former member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Berwick. Surviving are her three sisters and a brother: Catherine Sitler, of Berwick; Hazel Eckart and her husband, Harvey, of Berwick; Shirley Larock, of Sugarloaf and Barton Hough, Jr., of Bloomsburg. Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Hough. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, September 12th, 2019 at 11:00 AM at the Kelchner-McMichael-Baker Funeral Home, 119-121 East Third Street, Berwick, with Pastor Mike Delp, Commonwealth Hospice Chaplain, officiating. Burial will be in Albert Cemetery, Mountain Top. A viewing will be held Thursday from 10 AM until the time of the service at 11:00 at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association, 57 N. Franklin Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701.
