Dr. Anthony V. Galanti, 82 of Berwick, died Thursday, December 24, 2015 at his residence. He was the son of the late Joseph and Josephine (Biacchi) Galanti. Dr. Galanti was a member of Immaculate Conception Church (St. Mary's) of Berwick as well as a long-time member of the Maria Assunta Society. He also was a member of both the Berwick School Board for six years, where he served as vice president and president and the St. Mary's Parochial School Board (now Family School) in Berwick, where he served as president. His hobbies included biking, walking, reading, and golf. Dr. Galanti received his bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Penn State after which he held research engineering positions in New Jersey. He received a master's degree from the New Jersey Institute of Technology then joined the faculty at Penn State Hazelton to head the Chemical Engineering Technology program. On a sabbatical he accepted a full fellowship at Lehigh University and received a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering before returning to Penn State as an Assistant Professor. He remained at Penn State until his retirement in 1996. Dr. Galanti was promoted to Professor, the first faculty member at Penn State Hazelton to receive that rank. During his 30 year tenure as a teacher, researcher, and advisor, he served on numerous committees both at the Hazelton and University Park campuses. He received the Penn State Outstanding Teacher award of the General Engineering Department and passed the examinations to become a licensed professional engineer in Pennsylvania. Dr. Galanti taught engineering, chemistry, math, and physics courses to both associate and baccalaureate students. He received three National Science Foundation College Teacher awards and three NASA awards to support his scholarly research during the summers at various laboratories across the country. He was the primary author of 15 technical papers published in major, peer-reviewed journals, all in his field of polymer science and engineering while his Master's Thesis was published in the book form by the Plenum Press. He was a summer consultant for four years by PP&L's Susquehanna Nuclear Power Plant to instruct and develop training programs for their technical personnel. Surviving Dr. Galanti is his loving wife of 58 years, the former Janet Stout. Also surviving is his daughter, Michele Galanti of Florida and sister, Pauline Carter of Berwick. As well as his parents, he was preceded in death by son, Anthony J. Galanti in 1971, brother, Angelo in 2012, and sister, Gloria. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Frances Tamburro 10:00 AM Monday, December 28 at St. Mary's Church, 1730 Fowler Avenue, Berwick. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until time of the mass. Entombment will follow at Elan Memorial Park. Memorial contributions should be made to St. Mary's Church.
